Sette Occhi / Seven Eyes by Enzo Ciruolo

Thanks to Enzo Ciruolo in Italy for sending me a copy of his book "Sette Occhi" with my painting of "The Creature with Seven Eyes" on the cover. This is his first published novel, I believe, so congratulations to him. Also it was a prizewinning entry in a competition. As far as I can make out, via my lack of Italian, it's a noir mystery/thriller. From Google translate:

"Esdras is a young scholar of the Sacred University of San Policarpo. Because of the marks on his face, he has lived in solitude for as long as he can remember. Only Father Ure, a Consistorial considered by many a heretic, took pity on him and took him as a disciple. After years of intense study of the Masagida and sacred contemplation, the boy manages to be admitted to the prestigious university; however, the joy of reaching the goal is soon dissipated by a terrible event. Father Ure is brutally murdered and Esdras, realizing the similarities present in the dynamics of the murder with some events contained in the Sacred Texts, decides to investigate the identity of the executioner."

I'm wishing him much success with his book, and future career. He is also a very accomplished pianist.

The Books Have Arrived

Just delivered by the UPS guy...Diana's new book, "A New Global Agenda" arrived this morning. It's always exciting to hold the actual item in your hands...makes it more real, and has the new book smell (printer's ink, mostly).

A New Global Agenda book cover

Here is the (probably) final book cover for my wife's upcoming publication, A New Global Agenda, Priorities, Practices, and Pathways of the International Community. It's due out in February 2018, but available for pre-order via the publisher's website. See the link for the book page with all the details. And here is the original painting that was used (darkened a little for text legibility).

When I started working on this image, I thought I would do 3 or 4 variations on the theme & the publisher could choose the best one. However, they liked the first one, so that was that. I also did 3 section divider images (as ink drawings) for the inside of the book. I'll probably post those on this blog at some point.

It's a Small World

Small acrylic painting on rag paper. This may be an early version of a book cover image, but too early to tell. Stay tuned on that.

Listening to Night Whistles by Tina Hacker

My 2005 pencil study "The Train" which was done for my Holocaust series is now on the cover of Tina Hacker's poetry collection, Listening to Night Whistles, published by Aldrich Press. The drawing had to be darkened & reformatted to work on the cover, as the original drawing was done for the wing of a proposed triptych. I think it works surprisingly well, as the enhanced image reveals all kinds of markmaking in the drawing that I hadn't really noticed before.

I only received my copies of the books yesterday, after a long drive back from a long weekend in Toronto, so I haven't had a chance to actually read the book, though at first glance (& from reading several of Tina's poems beforehand) it seems a very resonant and finely crafted piece.

UDHR 5 on Silvia Scarpa Human Rights book

Special thanks to Silvia Scarpa in Rome, Italy, for sending me her book (& matching bookmark) with the painting of UDHR Article 5 prominently featured. The book looks very good with its matte varnish cover & I like the way the designer used the image with the title, etc.

An Introduction to International Human Rights Standards for Law Enforcement Authorities, by Silvia Scarpa, Universitalia 2012.

Silvia teaches various Human Rights courses at John Cabot University in Rome.

Shadow Bay is coming soon...

We still seem to be in the phase of squashing bugs & fixing typos, but Shadow Bay should be released in all its glory quite soon. We have a proof copy, which looks very good with its matte varnish cover...better than glossy... In any case, here is the cover again & a few interior images...some of the images in the book don't work so well without the text, but these seem to stand alone quite well.

The full cover.

David Fisher (main protagonist) keeps an eye on the horses in chapter 3.

David Fisher comes face to face with a big scary (dead) fish in chapter 2.

Fisher gets a fleeting glimpse of the normal life that passed him by, from chapter 5, Shadow Bay, written by Donald J. Rothschild and illustrated by myself, will be available soon. Please check back in a week or so.

Here is the back cover blurb:

He had felt it from the moment she looked back at him... they were the same, they had the same hunger, had taken the same hits, they’d been told to stop it, shape up and step up, but the hunger still remained. “Somehow I missed that train,” he said. “That everyday normal train. Somehow it pulled out without me.” She took a drink and slid below the covers... “I guess I missed that train too.”
