Tyranny

New painting:

Acrylic on unstretched canvas, 2007, 53" x 53" approx. I wanted to get back to raw, monochrome work. This is somewhat an extension of the War Room series, with elements of expressionism & social commentary.

The Silent One

Small new painting loosely based on one of the Hell sketchbook images:

Acrylic on board, 2007, 14" x 11".

The original sketch:

Brush & ink on paper, 2007, 11" x 8" approx.

Hell -- Learning to Fly

I'm continuing to work on the Hell sketchbook. There are now around 90 images -- I think the finished book will have around 150. One plan is to select the best 100 & publish them as a book of "100 Visions of Hell", possibly combining the sketches with other drawings on a similar theme from other periods -- I've occasionally done other pieces on the Hell theme. Here's a new drawing:

Clicking on the above yields a larger image, of course.

Brush & ink on recycled paper, 11" x 8" approx. I'm now experimenting with filling the page with figues & other elements, which is a bit Bosch-like, but I don't care at this point. It also references Redon, Ensor, & so on. Might as well throw everything in there...

In The Studio

Here's a vignette of the model in the studio:

Graphite on paper, 12" x 18", 2007. Just a rough sketch, but I think it captures the feel of the moment a little.

Nude With Cellphone

Another new life drawing, from last night.

Graphite on paper, 24" x 19", 2007. The cell phone was there so the model could time her poses with the clock function. I don't usually put that kind of thing in, but it was small, so I let it get into the drawing. The tattoos were ignored, however.

Standing Female Nude Study

Back from vacation (Spain/England). Life drawing done under mild jetlag duress. Not too bad.

Graphite on paper, 18" x 12", 2007. Yes, that's an ant on the paper, lower left. I coulda Photoshopped it out, but I didn't.

Seated Female Nude study

New life drawing from last night:

Graphite on paper, 2007, 24" x 19". Came out quite nicely, I think. I like the unfinished versus finished nature of various parts of the drawing.

Tree Of Lost Souls

Another drawing from the Hell sketchbook:

Brush & ink on recycled paper, 2007, 11" x 8" approx. The Hell sketchbook now has around 60 images -- going on for half-full. One idea would be to select & publish 100 of the best images as "100 Views of Hell". I'm not sure how this is going to turn out.

Men O' War (painted)

This is the painted version of the sketch in the post below:

Acrylic on plywood, 2007, 18" x 30". This painting went through many iterations, but it's finished now. I think.

Men O' War (ink sketch)

A sketch for a new version of the image "Man O' War", from the anti-war series of the same time period as The War Room:

This is the working sketch: pen & ink on paper, 2007, 6" x 10".

Stumbling Colossus

Here's a smallish painting I did a few months ago. I just photographed it today for the first time.

It's acrylic on board, 2007, 16" x 12". It's another mythological piece, I guess, though more loosely painted, almost abstractly so. I thought it was worth uploading.

Tree Of Souls

Another drawing in the Hell sketchbook:

Brush & ink on paper, 2007, 11" x 8". This one also has shades of the War Room images, the cluster of heads theme...

Soul In Stone

Another new drawing from the Hell sketchbook:

Brush & ink on paper, 2007, 11" x 8" approx. The series in the sketchbook is in part becoming a prism through which I can project familiar themes & ideas, as well as expanding & exploring new ones. Which sounds about right.

The Gift

Here's another one from the Hell Sketchbook:

Brush & ink on paper, 2007, 11" x 8" approx. Just another everyday scene from Hell.
