Civilization Interrupted by a Cataclysm

Another apocalyptic image.

Civilization Interrupted by a Cataclysm, 2012, acrylic on cardboard, 14.25" x 10.5" approx.

Back Against the Night Sky

A small, simple painting that was painted over an unsuccessful abstract-ish painting of a sky...the underpainting adds some depth to the piece.

Back Against the Night Sky, 2012, acrylic on board, 10" x 8".

Dreamless

The title of this was going to be something like "The Ancient One Awakens from a Dreamless Sleep of Millennia"...but I prefer the shorter version.

Dreamless, 2012, ink & acrylic on card, 11" x 8.5".

Seated Among the Rocks

A new piece on cardboard, the ink lines were done with a Pitt artist pen.

Seated Among the Rocks, 2012, ink & acrylic on cardboard, 14" x 11" approx.

A Sonnet for Orpheus

It's been a while since I did a substantial drawing, having been concerned recently more with painting. Here is a large-ish drawing I did today. Just trying to keep my skills up.

A Sonnet for Orpheus, 2012, brush & ink on paper, 23.5" x 18".

Annunciation (Nocturne)

A quite dark nocturnal painting...

Annunciation (Nocturne), 2012, acrylic on board, 12" x 9".

Angel in the Sea

This was a painting I did a couple of months ago. I found the photo today on my hard drive & decided to upload it. The wood texture of the plywood shows through in places, which is an effect I like & gives the piece another kind of depth. The black background was added digitally.

Angel in the Sea, 2012, acrylic on plywood, 48" x 21.5" approx.

Fish in a Dead Sea

This one went through many permutations, which is unusual for a small painting.

Fish in a Dead Sea, 2012, acrylic on board, 9" x 12".

The Little Ship on the Sea of Fate

In the end, this is all of us.

The Little Ship on the Sea of Fate, 2012, acrylic on board, 8" x 10".

Before Babel Fell

Small painting of the Tower of Babel (which reminds me a little of "Mad" John Martin's work) for the Apocalyptic series)...

Before Babel Fell, 2012, acrylic on board, 9" x 12".

Small Crucifixion Scene

Although I'm not a religious person, I have a tendency to use religious imagery from time to time...

Small Crucifixion Scene, 2012, acrylic on board, 10" x 8".

Boy In Red

Small painting of a boy in red...this may be unfinished...

Boy In Red, 2012, acrylic on board, 12" x 9".

The Portable Apocalypse

This small acrylic painting for the Apocalyptic series was at least partly inspired by seeing some works of the German expressionist Ludwig Meidner years ago...his panoramic scenes of apocalyptic destruction were somewhat undercut by the small physical scale of the paintings...

The Portable Apocalypse, 2012, acrylic on board, 8" x 10".

Sleeping With The Stars

A small painting of a head in a pointilistic style...the points of light are the titular stars...

Sleeping With The Stars, 2012, acrylic on board, 10" x 8".

The Glimpse

A glimpse of a strange creature.

The Glimpse, 2012, acrylic on board, 10" x 8".

The Coming Storm

I scanned this painting directly on the flatbed scanner. A small landscape for the Apocalyptic series.

The Coming Storm, 2012, acrylic on board, 8" x 10".

The Old and Weary Traveler

This one is a bit of a departure...almost abstract and geometric...

The Old and Weary Traveler, 2012, acrylic on cardboard, 18" x 18" approx.

A City Turned to Ashes

A small apocalyptic tondo:

A City Turned to Ashes, 2012, acrylic on a circular piece of cardboard, 5" diameter approx.

Eternity and The World

Another apocalyptic painting in monochrome on cardboard...I like the sepia effect & also the way the corrugation shows through a little. This is a GF Watts-esque allegory of the fragility of the planet...break this one & I'm not buying you a new one...

Eternity and The World, 2012, acrylic on cardboard, 23.5" x 19" approx.

Judgment Day

Come to think of it, this is an odd choice to create/upload on Mother's Day (US version):

Judgment Day, 2012, acrylic on cardboard, 23.5" x 19" approx.

The Mountain 2004

This was a painting from 2004 that I never had a decent photo of until today. Mountains figure quite often in my work, usually as a background element, but occasionally, as here, as the main subject. Mountains are massive and iconic. It's difficult to argue with a mountain.

The Mountain, 2004, acrylic on plywood, 19.75" x 18" approx.

Head of Venus

A mythological piece.

Head of Venus, 2012, acrylic on cardboard, 18" x 18" approx.

Study for a Pietà 2010

This is a larger size image repost of a small work done in 2010. I've been doing some Pietà-related work recently with a view to doing a (or some) larger sized pieces.

Study for a Pietà, 2010, ink & acrylic on cardboard, 8" x 5.75" approx.

Variation on a Pietà

Another version of a Pietà.

Variation on a Pietà, 2012, acrylic on cardboard, 18" x 18" approx.

Herald of End Times

Another one for the Apocalypse:

Herald of End Times, 2012, acrylic on cardboard, 18" x 18" approx.

The Last Man Alive Began to Sing

Another apocalyptic one:

The Last Man Alive Began to Sing, 2012, acrylic on board, 20" x 16".

Imaginary Boy

A new figurative acrylic painting:

Imaginary Boy, 2012, acrylic on board, 20" x 16".

The Survivors (study)

This is another little apocalyptic painting that might be a study for a larger piece.

The Survivors (study), 2012, acrylic on board, 10" x 8".

Icon / Welcome to Paradise

Another new smallish acrylic painting suffused with light, that looks like it should be entitled "Icon"...

Icon / Welcome to Paradise, 2012, acrylic on board, 18" x 14".

Red / Woman with Hair the Color of the Setting Sun

A new acrylic painting of a woman's head. This one went through quite a number of changes, & I'm still not sure it's done, but here it is:

Red / Woman with Hair the Color of the Setting Sun, 2012, acrylic on board, 18" x 14".
