A World of Souls

Seven Deadlier Sins

One of my more successful series of images, if visits to this blog are any indication, is the treatment of the Seven Deadly Sins that I first envisioned in the form of drawings about 5 years ago. Last year (2017) I produced a series of quite large paintings on unstretched canvas which were intended to be the definitive version of the images...however, I never really felt that these were the final pieces...but good & interesting enough to post here, perhaps as a placeholder for the actual final paintings. Maybe in the new year...

Hell painting circa 2010 -- unfinished, forgotten & destroyed

I was just looking through my hard drive backups for something else...funny how that happens...and I found this piece which was from around 2010 or maybe earlier. I spent quite some time on this one, but it just didn't come together & as far as I remember, I painted over it. However, looking at it now, there are some interesting ideas in there that might be worth reconsidering. You never know...

The Entrance to the Otherworld

This is from a new series of middle-sized (for me) acrylic paintings on plywood. It's a symbolist-leaning piece (reminds me a bit of Böcklin, with its inky sky and shrouded figure). The portal/tomb structure is actually influenced by a recent trip to the Mayan Riviera of Mexico (the three windows at the top come from "El Castillo" in Tulum). The pomegranates (or apples or whatever they are) are for Persephone. It's twilight, and the open door beckons.

Wide Awake & Alive

I did this new small piece as a companion to the previous one (see post below). I'm probably not going to do more purple (mauve?) pieces, these 2 seem to be enough. Fun fact: the purple acrylic paint is by Liquitex and is called "Brilliant Purple".

After the Rain...

...the world will be clean again. Another acrylic landscape painting (almost completely abstract) on the handmade rag paper. I have a certain kind of landscape image in my mind that I'm trying to get down in paint, & this is the closest I've come so far...

The Isle of the Cyclops

Continuing the island theme (see postings below), here is a small tondo of the fictional Isle of the Cyclops...inspired in part by Böcklin's Isle of the Dead, but with my own twist.

Cry for Humanity

I've been away for a while...concentrating on family stuff & also I had a busy summer making new work & felt like a rest would be good.

Here is a new small monochrome painting. Could be a new series. I bought four tinted hardboard panels from the art shop yesterday...stay tuned, as usual.

Attack on Babel

I've recently started painting on MDF (medium density fiberboard) since I discovered 9" diameter circular (and other shapes/sizes) surfaces useful for painting made out of the stuff. Here is another Babel variation (of many) for your perusal. More paintings of this style in the pipeline, most likely.

Spidery

This is another tiny tondo (circular painting) I've done recently. This one is a little grotesque, but because it's so small, has an endearing quality. I'm presenting it below in simulated actual size (depending on your monitor resolution, etc.) and in a larger version. I think the larger one holds up pretty well.
