The Hat with the Eye / AI

Another oddity/experiment in Leonardo.Ai. With this one I extensively repainted and regenerated the original image until I had this. The original had a sea urchin on a man's head...

New Dawn Fades

A new oil painting on panel. The title is borrowed from a Joy Division song, & I think they might have borrowed it from William Burroughs (?). Reality dissolves. I might do more work on this.

Venus Melancholy

This is a new small painting on canvas panel, hence the visible texture in the photo. I want to give this painting a day or two, as it may be done or may need more work. It's often better to sleep on it rather than overdo (or underdo) a painting.

Note: I've updated this posting with the final version (upper image).

She's Lost Control (Again)

A new drawing for the end of the year...title inspired by an old Joy Division song...I lost control of this drawing several times during its creation & I'm still not sure if I got it back...

Blind Truth drawing — NCAC art auction

This is a recent drawing I did specifically for the NCAC (National Coalition Against Censorship) annual art auction (since they asked me to donate something). Rather than pull an already-done artwork from the copious piles of those that I have, I thought I'd do something new. So, here it is, & also a link to the auction preview.

The Maid of the Mountains / Frozen in Time

After having spent the last month or two (or three) reading the Walter Isaacson "Leonardo da Vinci" biography (which I can recommend, more on that anon), I find that whenever I spend a significant period of time in the company of another artist's work, I start to absorb a certain amount of the sensibility of said artist. Which brings us to the work presented here, which is obviously a little more than a nod in the direction of the Mona Lisa (I was thinking of titling the piece "Anom Asil", for example), but I think I caught a little of the essence of the original, whilst bringing something different to the table...you can decide...

When Time Has No Meaning

Another large-ish drawing with the soluble carbon, which is working well for me. I may never use actual ink again...

From the Spiral Sea

I always wanted to draw (or paint) the Renaissance hair, as seen in works by Botticelli or Leonardo (and others of course), the flowing, curling, spiraling hair...this is my attempt to do that. Not too bad, I may do some other pieces in this direction...

From the Spiral Sea, 2016, brush & ink/wash on paper, 24" x 18".

Woman in a Headdress

I have a small backlog of new work that should be posted here...but you can catch up with the new pieces on my 2015 Gallery page on my main web site, if you like. Here is a drawing I did this morning:

Woman with a Dangerous and Mysterious Egg

This could be the beginning of a new small series of murky, crepuscular images done on jute panels, where the texture of the panel adds to the atmosphere of the artwork...

Weaver of Storms and Labyrinths

Something of a return to ink drawing...this one appeared rather organically on the page, with only a vague idea on my part of what was going to happen.

I think this might be a good one...

Holy Woman

Another new, small, light-infused painting. I'm enjoying giving my works more breathing space & a lighter palette. I will probably return to more monochrome themes, but for now I'm stretching out in this direction.

Woman with a White Headdress

This is a small piece done on a jute panel that I purchased from the local craft store over at the mall. I've always like the slightly ragged, unfinished look & feel of raw canvas, so this was a small chance to work on that surface. The panel came in a pack of three, so there may well be one or two others like this coming up soon.

If you click on the image to zoom in, you can really see the richness of the texture.

In the Land Beyond the Mountains

My monochrome paintings are becoming more complex, moving away from single heads and figures in shallow spaces and expanding to multiple figures and more detailed scenes.

The Futility of Beauty

A drawing that is a meditation on beauty, or the depiction of it in art...putting the word "beauty" in a title is usually a bad idea...Done with a Pitt fine line artist pen, in any case.

The Futility of Beauty, 2013, ink on paper, 24" x 19".

Another simple ink drawing with the Pitt artist pen:
