Blue

This small painting of a head entitled Blue is a piece I've been working on for almost a week & it finally came together today:

Prophecy

Another in the series of blue, murky paintings on jute. In this one, the title (I tend to think up the titles during the actual painting process) was cut down from more elaborate phrases into the single word "prophecy", which seemed to sum up the painting, whilst making it more enigmatic at the same time.

This could be the beginning of a new small series of murky, crepuscular images done on jute panels, where the texture of the panel adds to the atmosphere of the artwork...

The Evolutionist

This was a drawing from around 2008 that I don't think I've put up online before. I also, just the other day, did a digitally colorized version, so I'm putting both here below.

Leda of Delft

This is a digitally reworked version of the preceding drawing that I modified in Photoshop. The final result reminded me of Delft blue pottery, hence the title. Delft is also the city of Vermeer, of course.

Silverpoint on Blue & Ochre

I didn't heighten this with white as it didn't seem necessary.

I was originally gessoing this with blue, but I ran out, so I finished the priming later with an ochre blend. I like the way it came out, it adds to the ethereal, ghostly quality of the piece.

The Island of Mystery

Done at about 9pm in my studio under a spotlight -- I could barely see the image; the silverpoint on the blue ground tended to disappear. I'm surprised it came out reasonably well. I wanted to do an image that was not just a drawing of a head -- I've been doing those fairly obsessively lately. Reminds me of all those Symbolist paintings from the late 1900s & early twentieth century.
