Sun Angel I & II

 This was done in Blender using a winged head I sculpted a short while ago. I added a partial body & gave it a metallic gold texture, then lit it with an HDRI (high dynamic range image) as well as a sun light. By experimenting with the lighting, HDRI placement, composition, etc., I came up with the following images. The only difference between I & II is the rendering engine used (Eevee in the first, Cycles in the second). The results were suitably ethereal & heavenly, I think.

The Angel and the Isle of the Dead

This is an experiment combining two sculptures created in Blender (3D modeling software), and then practically obliterating the result in Photoshop by applying multiple filters. I think it works quite well, especially for a throwaway.

Since the world (the one we actually live in) has allegedly only about 10 years to go until at least widespread systemic collapse (no joke), I'm working on the Book of Revelations to try & avoid the disaster...which may not be much, but it's something. Here's an Angel to try & save things...

The Angel and the Cataclysm

This is a small piece painted on the four sides of a wooden block sized 5.5" high x 3.5"wide x 1.5"deep approx. I've presented it here scanned & laid out as a series of flat images. I think it works quite well, but is intended to be seen in three dimensions...the disjointedness becomes more apparent when seen as a continuous flat image.

The Most Human Angel of All

This was supposed to be a better version of "Angelic" (see below), the drawing that I destroyed, but that lived on in a much better incarnation as a digital piece. Whilst the composition is just about the same (quite similar, anyhow), the piece took on a life of its own & with the addition of acrylic paint over the sepia ink, became a much more emotionally resonant image (in my opinion, at least).

Angelic (digital)

Below is the digital version of a drawing that no longer exists. I originally started the drawing in sepia ink, which can be harder to work with than black ink on account of the paleness of the pigment. I find it more difficult to get an even tone. As time went on, the drawing became more and more overworked...I paused and took a digital photo in poor lighting conditions. To improve things, I loaded the photo into Photoshop & tried a few options...the "stamp" filter was the one that worked. Basically, it evened out the inconsistencies in the lines and revealed the underlying structure of the drawing much more coherently. Inspired by the digital version, I went back to the drawing and worked on it some more with black ink...with the unfortunate consequence that the drawing became more convoluted and weaker. Eventually, I destroyed the drawing. The digital version is much better than the drawing ever was...though it does indicate some possible routes forward for future artwork.

Monocolor Paintings

Here is a new series I've been working on for the past week or so. It started by accident (as so often happens) when a painting I was working on (Vestige, below) refused to make sense of itself & through a series of drastic changes became the red figure on a white ground as it now appears. I can't even remember what the original image exactly was, but it went through several (3 or 4) changes before simplifying itself into the iconic image it now is. I decided to try and continue on this path which had opened up for me...and I'm continuing to do so. I don't know how long or how far this will go.

The Wings of Time

A new painting that was difficult to photograph—the black paint, whilst appearing to be matt, tends to be quite reflective. The painting features the Tower of Babel (lower left), an angel (center, representing time) & the world (right).
