A new image for the Heaven & Hell series...inspired partly by Bosch/Breughel & also a nod to Jack Kirby...

The Temptation of St. Anthony
Here is another subject (for the Heaven and Hell series) that I've been wanting to try for a while, the temptation of St. Anthony, having enjoyed the versions by Bosch & Schongauer (& others) for many years.

Pieta
Although I am not a religious person per se, I do like to attempt iconic and epic subjects, which include biblical and religious ones.

Young John the Baptist
This is another smallish drawing that I did today that might be included in the Heaven and Hell series...I'm still deciding...
Young John the Baptist, 2011, ink on paper over pencil, 11" x 8.5".
Above: a slightly earlier, unfinished version.

Face of God
This is a painting I've been working on for some time now, for the Heaven and Hell series. It's been through several different stages (see posts below for a couple of them). It may be finished now, but possibly not.

How the World Was Won
Here is another new work for the Heaven and Hell series. It may be more of a finished sketch than a drawing, and I may develop the themes in this one a little more.

Orpheus | Angel
This is another new drawing for the Heaven and Hell series. The title refers to Rainer Maria Rilke's two most important poetic works, The Duino Elegies (from whence I have borrowed a number of angels) and the Sonnets to Orpheus.

The Soul of Blake
Here is a new brush & ink drawing from a photo of the death mask of the artist/poet, William Blake, for my Heaven and Hell series. Blake has long been an inspiration of mine, & it seems fitting that he be included in some way in this series.
The Soul of Blake, 2011, brush & ink on paper, 16.5" x 14".
Original photo was by Joanna Kane, from a book entitled "The Somnambulists", apparently. The photo comes up very frequently if you do a Google image search.

Bête Noire
Another new ink drawing for the Heaven and Hell series, a creature with 8 eyes. I was thinking that with this many eyes, the usual optical trick that I've seen used often, of putting 2 sets of eyes on a regular face, would not be so noticeable. However, I may have been wrong...

All Souls
This is a new smallish acrylic painting for the Heaven and Hell series. I think it came out quite well & may lead to other, similar works on this theme.
All Souls, 2011, acrylic on plywood, 12" x 12".
Here is an earlier, work-in-progress version:
The working title for this was "Where Life Begins and Ends", which I may re-use for another piece.
