Second piece on gatorboard

Below is my second (finished) piece on the gatorboard surface, The Mask of Morpheus. This is more of a monochrome painting (done over an ink & brush drawing, which can be seen underneath here & there). I am liking this as a surface to work on & am thinking of moving up in scale a little...

Hawkish Old Man

This is an ink & brush drawing done on gatorboard, a kind of very sturdy foamcore that resists bending & warping. It has a useful cardboard-sepia colored covering that I tend to favor. I think I may be using more of this material to work on...we'll see...

The Megalomaniac

This is a large-scale sketch done in brush & ink on a large pad of newsprint paper. Probably the start of a series of large drawings...

The Veils of Existence and the Breath of Life

This is an image I painted on the front of a drawing pad...I originally intended to do a simple sketch to finish the book off, as it were, but it got out of hand and took several days to complete.

The King of the World

This drawing (which might be a study for a painting) was partially inspired by Alexander the Great, the Macedonian King who conquered most of the known world during his lifetime. Allegedly, he wept when he learned there were no more lands to conquer. He died in Babylon at age 32 (of a fever, apparently) & his mummified corpse spent the next several centuries (before it was lost in the debris of history) on semi-public show in Alexandria (the city that bore his name) in Egypt, after a sojourn in Memphis. His body was mummified in honey & encased in a gold coffin (later replaced by a glass or crystal one). Roman Emperors would pay homage to his body over the centuries, until a combination of the end of the pagan era & natural catastrophes erased his tomb and mortal remains from the world...

In any case, for anyone who wants to "rule the world", it's an interesting cautionary tale. Here is the Wikipedia page, which is quite comprehensive.

Two Fireplaces

When not painting artwork on things, I occasionally just paint things. Case in point, our two fireplaces. Both were a little old, dull & dark, so I bought a gallon of off-white (White Viejo, I believe) masonry paint & brightened them up. Notice also various pieces of actual artwork displayed nearby. This is a small painting I started work on around a month or so ago, then got busy with other things. Today I finished it.

Cored in Sow's Ear Poetry Review

Just got my copy of The Sow's Ear Poetry Review, Summer 2014 edition in the mail today, & there is my drawing "Cored" from 2003 on page 12, along with a very good poem by Mark Kliewer of Madison, Wisconsin. I knew that this was going to arrive sooner or later, but always a pleasant surprise to find something like that in your mailbox.

I also had some artwork in an earlier issue of this journal a few years ago.

Leda's Return

I bought some new brushes today, which tends to give a fresh feel to ink drawings. I did this loose-ish drawing this evening & took a flash photo, which didn't come out as well as it could have, so I played around with the image in Photoshop a little...
