Forgotten Idol of Tomorrow

I just took this new one up to the Limner Gallery in Hudson NY for the upcoming "Show of Heads". I believe it's currently displayed in the window. It came out well, it kind of has an amber glow about it, which offsets the post-apocalyptic subject matter a little. I took this photo outdoors, on the back deck by the kitchen window, trivia fans.

A Show of Heads / Limner Gallery / October 2013

I just received some postcards from the Limner Gallery in Hudson NY where I am featured in the upcoming Show of Heads, a fixture of the gallery calendar, like the "Strange Figurations" show they also have every year. I've scanned in the postcard -- front side image is by Ċ½eljko Brguljan, reverse side image by Kelly Blevins, & I've added my own piece, "The Strange Case of the Tragic Hero" below. Also highlighted my name in the list of artists. The Limner Gallery is at 123 Warren Street, the main street of Hudson, NY. The gallery web site is here. Hope you can make it...

Officially represented by the Limner Gallery

Important news:

The Limner Gallery, 123 Warren Street, Hudson, NY 12534. Phone: 518-828-2343.

I'm taking this moment to announce that I'm now officially represented by the Limner Gallery in Hudson, NY. This means that collectors & other interested parties can liaise with the gallery if they so wish -- I believe that some collectors would prefer not to deal directly with the artist.

Here is a link to the Limner Gallery artists page:

And the Limner Gallery / Direct Art Magazine home page:

Finally, here is a link to my artist page.

Below are some examples of my work that have been shown in the gallery and/or magazine over the years:

The Logic of War, 2008 (as seen in the "Show of Heads" exhibit.)

Future Human, 2009 (as seen in Direct Art magazine.)

Head of Fascism, 2005 (as seen in a "Show of Heads" & the magazine.)

Strange Figurations at the Limner Gallery, Oct 3rd

While I was up in Hudson NY at the Limner Gallery yesterday to pick up a couple of copies of Direct Art Magazine (see post below), Tim Slowinski (artist, gallery owner) was laying out works for next week's show, Strange Figurations. I'm not in the show, probably because I didn't get around to entering anything for it. Anyhow, I wasn't in the gallery very long, but Tim did have several pieces of artwork for the show spread around, some already on the walls & some on the floor propped against the wall.

Here is the postcard announcing the show:

You can click on the image for a better view.

Here is the back of the card:

Again, if you click on the image, you will get a more legible version.

The 2 pieces that were present yesterday that really caught my eye were 2 very small, jewel-like oils on panel by Tim French. Apparently, they caught Slowinski's eye, too, as he put one of them very prominently on the front of the postcard, the 3-eyed smoking dude called "Obey." I was really struck by those 2 pieces, so I thought I'd give a mention to Tim (or Timothy) French. I've seen a few pieces of his work before at Limner, & I really feel that he has something that stands out & his work just seems to get better & better. Here is a link to his web site:

www.kitsch22art.com

Here is his artist page on the Limner web site:

www.slowart.com/limner/htm/gall-art/french/index.htm

And, finally, here is the Limner preview page for the Strange Figurations show:

Actually, the above link seems to represent whatever the current exhibit is, so if you view this in a couple of months from now, it will probably be something very different.

At last -- the Limner Gallery window photo

The Emerging Artists show ended at the Limner Gallery in Hudson NY today. I went up to pick up my "Menowar" painting (see a couple of posts below regarding my problems taking a photo of it in the window). Today I had arranged to pick up the painting when hopefully lighting conditions would be a bit better. They were -- and yet, my camera decided not to work. Luckily artist/gallery owner Tim Slowinski had a camera handy & he took a few shots:

[note the small Slowinski painting on the side wall]

The partial wall facing the window is actually on casters, so we angled it a bit to get a better shot. All's well that ends well. Thanks again to Tim for his photographic skills.

Limner Gallery Review

Thanks to the Limner Gallery (see previous post down below) in Hudson, NY for sending this along, a review of the "Emerging Artists" show which runs until Saturday. The review is from "The Artful Mind", a local art paper. My "Menowar" painting is featured at the top & I get a nice mention. Click on the image for a more legible version.

Limner Gallery, Hudson, NY

Today I drove north up to the Limner Gallery in Hudson, NY, to take some photos of my painting, "Menowar", which is in the "Emerging Artists" group show there this month, & happens to be prominently featured in the window. I thought I should capture this historic moment on (digital) film, so I threw my camera in the car, along with a tripod that didn't become necessary & off I went...

Figure 1. Menowar painting & a lot of reflections.

Of course, I hadn't figured that maybe lighting conditions wouldn't be optimal. It's a bright, cloudless, sunny day here in the Hudson Valley. A perfect day for taking some snapshots, you (I) might think. Well, it depends if you're photographing a shiny gallery window in bright sunlight.

Figure 2. Limner Gallery sign, not under glass.

Of course, I tried shooting the photos from all kinds of different angles & such, but to not much avail. Hudson is a pretty town with lots of very picturesque buildings, which can be seen quite clearly in the following photos:

Figure 3. Houses on Warren St. obscure my painting.

Figure 4. Self-portrait of the artist as a shadowy blur, with Hudson houses.

BTW, here is what the painting actually looks like:

Figure 5. Menowar, acrylic on board, 2007, 18" x 30", as it should be seen.

Still, it was nice to get out & visit Hudson, albeit briefly. I shall have to return, maybe over the weekend & shoot the painting perhaps at night, when it is illuminated by the lights in the gallery window. Until then, here are some shots of Warren St., the main street of Hudson.

Figure 6. Warren St., Hudson, looking sort of in the direction of the Hudson River, I guess.

Figure 7. Red van going up Warren St. in the other direction.

Hudson -- a very nice town to visit -- there are some excellent galleries, restaurants & stores to see, as well as other nearby attractions (such as Olana, the painter Frederic Church's house).

Menowar again

This is just to announce that the painting "Men O' War" (or even "Menowar")-- also just published in Sow's Ear Poetry Review -- has been accepted for the Limner Gallery "Emerging Artists" show in March (from the 7th to the 28th) 2009. Below is the piece:

Menowar, 2007, acrylic on plywood, 18" x 30".

I'd also like to mention that there is another painting of this subject, begun before but finished after the one above -- I didn't like the original version, but later returned & "fixed it":

Menowar Variant B, 2007, acrylic on plywood, 18" x 30".

The painting was done for possible inclusion in the Museum on the Seam's traveling "Coexistence" project. It is unclear whether the piece (in digitally altered form, printed on a large banner) has been or will be exhibited on the continuing world tour of that show. Here is the piece as I altered it in Photoshop:

Noexistence, digitally altered painting, 2007.

Around the same time as the painted versions, to help with visualizing the piece, I did a small pen & ink sketch:

Menowar working sketch, 2007, 6" x 10" approx.

Backtracking further, I did a painting in 2004 called "Man O' War", which was the basis for the double version:

Man O' War, 2004, acrylic on plywood, 24" x 19.75".

The 2004 painting was in turn based upon a 2003 brush & ink drawing, which was created at around the same time & in the same spirit as the War Room pieces:

Man O' War, 2003, brush & ink on paper, 14" x 11". Private collection, upstate NY. Also published in Direct Art magazine volume 11, Spring-Summer 2005

It's always interesting (to me, at least) to see how a particular image evolves & takes on a life of its own. I don't usually do multiple versions of a piece. I sometimes do, as in this case, or in a few other thematic examples you might be able to notice in my work.

At this point I have no further plans to do other versions of "Man/Men O' War". But, you never know.

A Show of Heads at the Limner Gallery

Here's a scan (sorry the top image got stripey somehow) for the Limner Gallery (Hudson, NY) exhibit, "A Show of Heads" featuring the "Logic of War" painting, which should be visible on this blog in the left sidebar.

You can click on the scan of the reverse of the postcard for the info, but here it is anyway: the show runs from 1-29 November 2008. The opening reception is on Sat, Nov 1 from 4-6pm. The Limner Gallery is at 123 Warren Street (the main street, basically) of Hudson. You can reach Hudson via Amtrak from NYC (Penn Station) going towards Albany, NY. Maybe I'll see you there...

The image on the front of the postcard is "Cry Baby For Me", a digital print by Susan Kaprov (12" x 14"). The small image on the back of the postcard (below) is "Bull Market" by Peter Cameron (oil on board, 24" x 24"). Apologies again for the streaks on the scan above -- blame my scanner.

Here is the Limner Gallery web site.
